Peer Review

Dear Students,

Please read and follow the directions on the Peer Review page.  To go to the Peer Review Page click on this link: Peer Review Guidelines and Form.  You must complete one peer review for each of your two partners by the end of class today.  This means that you will need to proofread each report before filling out the form.  If you have extra time, please take the suggestions left by your peer review partners and begin editing your report.  Have a great class!

Mr. Kahler ,

Welcome to PBworks 2.0

This is a real workspace!  Please edit this page, create new pages, and invite others to use the workspace with you. It helps you with many things including the bird report!

Welcome to our Wiki

Welcome to the Tualatin Valley Academy Wiki space.  What's a "Wiki"?  A wiki is a collaborative website which can be edited by anyone with access to it.  Any number of us can create, modify and organize web page content together.  In this case, the "web page content" is our reports!

I hope it will be easy for you to use this Wiki to post the parts of your report, share your comments on other reports, and then edit your reports based on feedback.  Everyone in the class can see your work and help you with it!  That said, this is the first time Tualatin Valley Academy has ever used a Wiki system for peer review, so let's learn like a team.

A Wiki is great because, let's say, you've found a spelling or grammar mistake in this Front Page content (and I promise I've hidden some for you).  You can simply click the "edit" button at the top of the page, and quickly correct my mistakes. (Thank you, in advance!)  If something isn't clear and you think you can make it better, feel free!  We're working together to help each other learn and work.

How we'll use this Wiki

Creating and saving your report

You'll notice on the right a "7th grade Bird Reports" folder and an "8th grade Bird Reports" folder.  This is where you will save your report and continue to work on it. Click on "Create a Page" at the top right corner. Enter your first and last name and then select the correct folder for your class, below this selection it says "Create... click here".

You may write by clicking the "EDIT" icon at the top of the page. DO NOT FORGET TO SAVE YOUR WORK. The save button is located at the bottom of the page. (It says save or cancel.)

*****Give this a test run. Please email me if you have any problems at philk@tvja.org

Do NOT Worry about graphs and photos at this point, however if you want to play around with it, that is fine too.

Inserting Your Graph and Photos

It's quite easy to add image files in PBworks.  However, I've found that PBworks and Excel are not as compatible as I'd hoped because it is difficult to save Excel graphs as images that can then be easily uploaded into PBworks. Here's my suggested work-around: use Google Spreadsheets instead of Exel.  Don't worry-- it is incredibly easy!  If you are somewhat familiar with Excel, you should have little trouble. If not, here are step-by-step instructions:

1. Enter your data Either cut and paste your data from Excel into a Google Spreadsheet, OR simply enter it right into Google Spreadsheets. See http://docs.google.com.

2. Begin the graph Using Google Spreadsheets is similar to Excel (or even easier!!). To make a graph of your data, use the "insert" button to create a chart. It will step you through what kind of chart to make and how to label it, similar to Excel does.

3. Save your graph and make an image of it When you are happy with it, save the chart. Then, you can save an image of it (using the drop-down menu that says "chart" which is right above your graph). It easily saves it as a PNG file (the only option).

4. Upload the image of your graph into PBworks   Go to the "upload file" option in PBworks, and look for the PNG image you just saved. Upload it.

5. Add your graph to your report Open your report to edit it. Along the right side of your report is the "insert links" choices. Go to "images and files" and click the title of your graph. It will automatically insert it into your report!

Note that steps 4 and 5 are the same procedure you'd use if you'd like to add a photo or other image into your report.

Peer Reviewing another classsmate's report

For the peer review, everyone is asked to edit and comment on at least two classmate's final reports.  Of course, you can comment on as many reports as you like.

1. Open someone's report. You can see the "comment" box at the bottom of it. If possible, comment on a report that only has fewer than 2 other comments.  Keep in mind, this is a peer review, so your constructive criticism is welcome: better to help your classmate think about improvements now, rather than after they begin collecting data!

2. For minor edits (i.e. spelling, grammar, etc.), make the change directly in the report (click on the Edit tab at the top left of the page). Don't worry, they'll be able to see the changes you've made and can always switch back if they want (click on Page History at the top right of the page).

3. For major edits or to make suggestions, please use the comment box. A good rule of thumb is to make at least one positive comment and at least one suggestion for improvement in the comment box.  Be sure to leave comments so they'll know you've helped them with their report!

3. Save any changes... and repeat this with another report.
